Different types of advanced nuclear technologies
China has entered the nuclear fusion race, according to reports in Nature and the Financial Times in August and September 2024. Nuclear fusion, the process that powers the Sun and stars, merges two atomic nuclei into a larger one, releasing energy. And, can we go on from that to build reliable, economic, fusion power plants? Can we get sufficiently beyond breakeven to produce electricity for the first time? So instead of building ever larger tokamak devices, with huge costs and long timescales, we can see a way forward by increasing the magnetic field in more compact devices. One showed for the first time that it is feasible to build a low power (~100MWe) tokamak with a high power gain.
Many experts think that fusion is still two or three decades away from being commercially viable, though some start-ups aim to have plants up and running by the 2030s. We will deliver net energy conditions well before the end of the decade and commercial net energy by the early 2030s. For example, two hydrogen atoms combine to form helium, releasing far more energy than fission. Given the difference in the maturity and level of development of these technologies, let’s unpack the status of each and the expected outlook. “For the next few years, it’s essential to work together. The challenge in increasing the gain for the targets, making them more efficient and simpler, which will make it more cost- effective for an energy application, that work is the same, whether astrophysics, or energy applications. At some point the paths diverged, I need to work with all of them in concert with each other now, and then I need to know there is an off-ramp for the energy application for it to be supported independently.” “We get a small gold can, focus 192 laser beams into that can to generate an x-ray bath. They bathe a tiny capsule in the centre which is filled with hydrogen fuel. As the outer surface of the capsule, made out of diamond, blows off, the inner surface moves in, that compresses the hydrogen fuel. If you compress it fast enough and hold it together long enough, the fusion reaction becomes self-sustaining.
“It is the world’s most energetic laser. The footprint of the laser facility itself is about the size of three American football fields. And about 10 stories tall. That laser produces about two megajoules of laser energy that goes to the target. What we do with that energy is concentrate it down to a small volume to get to extremely high temperatures and densities. John Nuckolls, now in his 90s, was one of the pioneers of inertial confinement fusion. As more cities follow San Francisco and San Jose in banning gas hookups for new construction, heat pumps will be the de facto replacement system. In the rural northeast, heat pumps, in combination with rooftop solar, are increasingly common, moving residents away from burning fuel and firewood. Right up against the arctic circle in Norway, nearly two thirds of homes rely on heat pumps to stay warm, and just over 40% have them in Sweden and Finland. But, as widespread adoption in Scandinavia over the last ten to fifteen years has shown, heat pumps can operate in frigid temperatures.
The case for fusion energy

- During the summer, the process can be reversed, moving heat out of the house in order to cool it.
- The Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2024 report showed that after a decade of progress, the global energy transition has plateaued amid the global energy crisis and geopolitical volatilities.
- Nuclear fusion power would revolutionize the energy sector — and one of the most environmentally impactful and increasing needs is in home heating and cooling.
The World Economic Forum’s Centre for Energy and Materials is driving the transition to a “fit for 2050” energy system. Investors are pouring money into these advanced nuclear technologies, and they’re progressing quickly. Some claim they can reduce the time it takes for waste to decay from half a million years to less than 500 years. Innovative start-ups are developing ways to shrink the volume and toxicity of nuclear waste. But even with its small footprint, waste remains a key concern for the public, as it can take thousands of years to decay.
- It’ll take years to get there, but at fusion’s fullest capacity, anyone will be able to use as much electricity as they need, with no environmental costs and very little expense.

South Korean nuclear fusion reactor sets new record
While the growth in renewables over the past decade has been promising, nuclear fusion is only beginning to gain the recognition and support required to push it toward commercial use. E-waste, or waste electrical and electronic equipment, is the fastest-growing waste stream globally, with an estimated 62 billion kilogrammes produced in 2022 alone. US electric utilities are predicting a surge of new demand from data centres, with some companies forecasting electricity sales growth several times higher than just a few months ago, Reuters reports. Nuclear fusion has the potential to provide limitless, carbon-free energy by mimicking the phenomenon that powers stars. The KSTAR nuclear fusion reactor is known as South Korea’s “artificial sun”. These are just a few of the ways affordable commercial fusion energy could reshape life on Earth as we know it, which is why it’s worth pursuing.
Nuclear Security
The 10 countries that score the highest in terms of readiness account for only 2.6% of global annual emissions. Plus, improvements in the energy intensity of the global economy (the amount of energy used per unit of economic activity) are slowing. It only lasted for a fraction of a second, but it proved fusion could be a power source, rather than a power drain. Then, in 2022, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California achieved ‘Lawson’s criterion,’ making the first net-positive energy gain from a controlled fusion reaction.
A concerted effort towards fusion energy is the best way to solve the pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure the supply of safe, clean energy long into the future. Effective policies, private-sector action and public-private cooperation are needed to create a more inclusive, sustainable, affordable and secure global energy system. Recent research, including MIT’s first market analysis of fusion, projects fusion could surpass coal — which supplies 34% of global electricity — as the world’s leading power source.
Is the world ready for the transformational power of fusion?
Its final experiment, conducted in December, marked a significant milestone in fusion research. The JET lab, once the world’s largest and most advanced fusion reactor, began its pioneering experiments in 1983. The Joint European Torus site, to give it its full name, was a collaboration of European nuclear scientists.
With energy superabundance, desal would not only be able to keep California’s desert cities hydrated, those plants would be able to supply irrigation for vast carbon sequestration projects across the arid world. Energy costs for desal are so high that plants sit idle more often than not. Access to fresh water is drying up around the world, focusing attention on desalination (desal) technology, which can make plentiful drinking water from the sea. Fusion energy is arguably the most exciting human discovery since fire. Countries have different starting points for the green transition. Fusion fuel – different isotopes of hydrogen – must be heated to extreme temperatures of around 50 million degrees Celsius, kept stable under intense pressure, and dense enough and confined for long enough to allow the nuclei to fuse.
On the need for investment
Recent surveys indicate that technology is now the primary driver of change and disruption for businesses across sectors and leaders will need to be equipped with a new leadership toolkit to adapt to and fully capitalize on these deep and structural changes. Estimates put the country’s fusion budget at around $1.5 billion a year – almost double that allocated by the US government to research in 2024. What will it take for India to lead on deep tech and the global space race? None can be certain of success yet, globally, we must try. Can we get to fusion breakeven in a compact device? Can we get to fusion temperatures in a compact device?
Sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 12% in March compared to the same month in 2023, data from Rho Motion shows. The easing of inflation is expected to drive demand recovery in emerging markets, while increasing integration of AI technology is likely to attract buyers to premium devices. The global smartphone market is set to rebound 3% in 2024, according to a new report from Counterpoint Research.
With fusion powering the factory (and the logistics infrastructure too), those reductions would be even greater. A number of clean and important inventions have lagged because of high energy costs. Commercial fusion energy alone is exciting, but consider the ripple effect of how fusion markets a shift in energy supply can affect industry and our environment. But she said the timescale to generating power could be “two or three decades away” and urged great collaboration to build a fusion “ecosystem”.
Even in a drought, when freshwater supplies are scarce, it’s not cost-effective to run most desal plants because of energy costs. One problem was that the process, which usually involves distilling seawater multiple times until all the salt is removed, uses an incredible amount of energy. At Davos in 2023, Kim Budil, the lab’s director, explained the experiment involved beaming 192 lasers on a tiny target and heating it to create a self-sustaining reaction. In December 2022, scientists at the lab managed to produce more energy from the reaction than it consumed – a net gain of 1.5 megajoules in less time than it takes light to travel one inch. Globally, government labs and companies are racing to generate power from fusion – including at the US Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
On average, the waste from a reactor supplying a person’s electricity needs for a year would be about the size of a brick. The International Atomic Energy Agency says that over 80 SMR designs are in development worldwide, targeting electricity, heating, water desalination and industrial steam. Unlike traditional nuclear power (fission), which splits atoms, fusion joins smaller atoms to make heavier ones. According to the World Nuclear Association, fusion offers a nearly endless energy source with close to zero emissions. Surging power demand from AI and other applications for carbon-free energy sources that operate 24/7 are steeply increasing levels of interest in nuclear energy. Nuclear energy produces about 10% of the world’s electricity, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Fusion also is the critical driver for enabling exciting artificial intelligence applications powered by energy-hungry data centres. Extending this 7% price reduction across all energy consumption in the United States could save consumers $119 billion per year and help curb inflation, as energy costs are a significant driver of consumer prices. One way to understand fusion’s potential global economic impact is to look at a single market.
